Each year, Wellness@Dickinson presents a variety of program options. Some examples of the programs, screenings or activities offered are included in the list below.

Biometric Screening

The biometric screening is a comprehensive screening tool used to assess several health markers, including metabolic syndrome. It is an easy, cost-effective way to find out if you may have current or potential health problems. This health screening includes blood tests that may detect risk for heart disease and diabetes. The health screening is free to employees and their spouse/domestic partner and dependents ages 18 years and over.

Metabolic syndrome is a collection of heart disease risk factors that increase your chance of developing heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. The number of people with metabolic syndrome increases with age, affecting more than 40 percent of people in their 60s and 70s. Several factors increase your risk for developing the syndrome: high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes or high blood sugar, a lack of physical activity, smoking, and family history.

Monitoring your blood pressure, blood glucose, cholesterol levels, and BMI gives you the ability to stay on top of your overall health. Knowing your numbers provides the information to you for conversations with your personal physician. Do you know your numbers?

Confidentiality Note: The Biometric Screening provides a snapshot of your health, looking at your total cholesterol, glucose, blood pressure, height, weight, waist circumference, and body mass index (BMI). It is a collective review of your risk factors for developing heart disease, stroke, and diabetes known as Metabolic Syndrome. If you participate in a biometric screening on campus, your individual screening results are only provided to you.

Health Risk Assessment

The is free and available to ANYONE to complete to learn about their own modifiable health risks. The results come ONLY to you and provide a snapshot of your personal health risks.  Before beginning, collect your personal biometric screening information, including your most recent blood pressure, height, weight, and glucose/cholesterol/triglyceride levels.

Seasonal Flu Vaccinations

Receiving a seasonal flu vaccination is an effective way to reduce your chances of getting the flu—particularly if you are in a high-risk category. Seasonal flu vaccinations through the Wellness Center are to Dickinson employees.

Tobacco Cessation Counseling

Tobacco Cessation programs are available to employees of the college through their Meritain medical insurance plan and other local healthcare professionals. Locally, Sadler Health Center offers a tobacco treatment specialist certified through the Mayo Clinic and provides the latest techniques and resources available for assisting those who want to quit tobacco and helps individuals develop a unique quit plan, coping techniques, and stress management skills. Sadler’s quit rate at Quit Day (session #4) is typically 100 percent. Also, the national average of those quitting tobacco six months from their quit date is 22 percent; Sadler’s quit rate at six months is 48-50 percent.
