Mindful Pursuits

Sierra Phillipson '27

Student Snapshot: Sierra Phillipson ’27

The human experience fascinates Sierra Phillipson ’27, and as a neuroscience major with a minor in sociology, she explores it from distinct vantage points. Below, Phillipson discusses what drew her to Dickinson, the caring community she’s found on campus, her love of social-media marketing and her plans to become a neurosurgeon.

Hometown:

Wichita, Kansas.

Major

Neuroscience, with a sociology minor.

Clubs and organizations:

Student Senate (executive board, PR and marketing, liaison for Title IX), social media ambassador and Orientation (leader).

Best thing about my Dickinson experience so far:

The best thing about my Dickinson experience is being able to meet so many amazing people and expand my horizons.

Best thing about my major:

I’ve always wanted to know why we are able to do what we can do and how the brain works. There’s so much out there that we’ve yet to learn, and I’m excited for the future of science.

On choosing Dickinson:

I decided to attend Dickinson because I wanted to be able to have the liberal-arts college experience and be away from home. The school has an amazing program for my major, and I wanted to be able to pursue exactly what I wanted.

Hobbies:

I love digital marketing. I did digital marketing for clubs in high school, and I have always loved being able to use social media for promotions. I am now the director of PR and marketing for Student Senate, as well as a social-media ambassador for Dickinson’s Office of Marketing & Communications, and I hope to be able to use my passion to get the word out about events for students.

About my internship:

Over the summer, I interned at Partnership for Better Health here in Carlisle. Partnership for Better Health focuses on health equity and access, and that appealed to me as someone who has medical problems that run in my family. I think everyone should be able to have access to services that could change their lives.

Post-Dickinson plans:

I plan to apply to medical school after a gap year or semester, in hopes of becoming a neurosurgeon.

Most important thing I’ve learned so far:

The most important thing I’ve learned so far is that it is OK to ask for help. The Dickinson community is really caring, and everyone wants the students to be at their best, so never feel ashamed for reaching out to anyone.
